For many of us, pushing our hair styles to the max between washes is a must. We don’t want to lose an ounce of the styling and luster that we walked out of the shop with, but realize the day-to-day grind is working against us.

What’s a girl to do who has a full-time job, in the office or at home, exercises regularly, and can’t make it to the salon consistently? From expecting mothers to busy executives, we’re all in need of solutions that will keep our locks neat and polished until we see the stylists chair again.

Here are a few of our hair maintenance tips to stretch your ‘do further when there is no other way.

Sweat Bands

I love a good workout session. But what I don’t love is all that sweat! A good work around for reducing the effects of sweaty hair is to use sweat bands. Yes, this sounds very old school. But sweat bands come in many different forms these days. Really, anything that can catch a good portion of sweat before it reaches your hair – from bandanas to headwraps – can work. Of course you won’t escape sweaty hair completely, but by allowing the hair to stick in place with bands or wraps, you can at least buy yourself a few more days.

Try: Save Your Do GymWrap – This product is “a stylish headband developed with a patented revolutionary “Edge Control Technology” that minimizes sweat absorption through a unique blend of materials that allows heat to escape while letting cool air in.” Bonus: a portion of the proceeds go to Nicole Ari Parker and Boris Kodjoe’s Sophie’s Voice Foundation (SVF).

longhairWrap Hair

Speaking of wrapping hair, this is one of the best ways to keep your straightened hair slick and luxurious for stretches of time. Hair wrapping seems like a natural thing for most women of color, but there are still many who go without. The technique involves wrapping your hair around your head with a brush until it stays put well enough to place a scarf on. The scarf or wrap will keep bumped or curled hair molded so it maintains your original style in the morning when you comb it down. (Not to mention keeping pillow fuzz away.)

Edge Control

Is there ever not a need for edge control? Whether we’re rocking braids, twists, or a weave, those little hairs just seem to pop out over night taking away from the freshness of our style. What do you do to keep your edges clean and slick? We find that a good combination of product, combing or brushing, and wrapping will do the trick. The idea is to last all day without worrying about little unruly hairs taking away from your polished ‘do. There are many options out there worth trying. Ask us about our suggestions next time you’re in Beautique!

Try: Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Edge Control – “Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Edge Control is perfect for control of your edges! This non-sticky, non-greasy formula allows for an excellent hold without hardening your hair.”

seamlesstwistsBraids

When all else fails, braids are an excellent way to keep it cute in a low maintenance way. Cornrows, twists, or singles make it quick and convenient to start your day without the fuss, and continue on worry free. Plus, these looks usually last for weeks. If you can manage to slip away for a few hours to get your hair braided, you’ll find freedom and satisfaction for months out of the year. Braids are about as easy as it gets, and still appropriate for any occasion or occupation.

So these are just a few of our tried and true hair maintenance tips for the woman-on-the-go. We understand life gets super busy, things have to get done, and we have to stay fit. So keep these tips in mind as you continue conquering the world.
